Day 17 - Mt Cook

Nov 12, 2008
Yesterday's 400 km dash has made Rashmi sick and today we have a 485 km drive to Franz Josef. Mt Cook village and Franz Josef lie on either side of Mt Cook, but there isnt a road that connects them. So you have to go all the way to Wanaka and then drive up the coast. You can see Mt Cook from both places. Take a look at the South Island map.

Before we drive off to Franz Josef we had the Mt Cook village itself to visit. We really arent in the mood to do anything strenuous, but decide to check out the place. Mt Cook National Park is the area in which Edmund Hillary had perfected his climbing skills before he went off to conquer Mt Everest. It stands 12000 ft tall. Lake Pukaki is a glacial lake, the colour of the lake is due to the rock flour that has been mixed in the water, the rock flour is formed by the glaciers erroding the rocks. We decide to take a short hike and after about 20 mins we give up and return. We also take a short drive towards Tasman glacier. It is a glorious day on our drive away from Mt Cook. Lake Pukaki looks out of this world, I cant seem to stop clicking photos of the lake.
