Christchurch is like any other city, so we plan to get out of there, it is a disappointment after all the wonderful stuff we had seen elsewhere in the south island. We have 2 options, go to Kaikoura and see the whales or go to Hanmer Springs and have a relaxing bath in the hot springs. We chose Hanmer Springs, since therapy wins over ugly whales. It is a 2 hour drive one way, and again it is a wonderful day. Once at Hanmer Springs, we hang around, check out Hanmer river take a dip in the hot springs before returning. I finaly find a polo shirt with NZ written on it as a souvenir for myself. We wanted to find a nice spot under a tree with all the greenery around, so we could have a picnic lunch, we drove for nearly 50 km without finding one, even though all the area looks green and very inviting, it is all private property that is fenced to keep people like you and me out.
